Recommended Physical Exercises for Retirement Home Residents

With ageing comes along the fact the body may no longer be as functional compared to how it was when a person is much younger. An elderly may already suffer from different types of health conditions that may bring about discomfort and pain. And that is why, retirement homes make sure that their residents are able to have daily exercises to maintain their body functions and at the same time improve their immune system. There is a direct relation on exercise in boosting the immune system. Through exercise, a person is able to flush out bacteria from the lungs, that which prevents common infections such as cough, colds and other illnesses. Through sweating and other forms of excretion in the body that is triggered by physical activity, other disease- causing agents such as carcinogens are flushed out of the body. Exercising can also trigger the increase in the production of white cells and antibodies which are responsible for combating infection and diseases. Circulation is improved with exercise which means that these antibodies and white cells are distributed well all throughout the body. In addition, exercise has been known to prevent heart diseases, improve digestion and at the same time it can also provide a sort of recreation for the elderly especially for those who are living in retirement homes.

Ottawa Home Care has a well planned exercise routine brought to the elderly by their expert caregivers. These physical activities are specifically patterned for the elderly to easily perform and at the same time provide health and improvement in their current health condition.  They assist elderly in performing aerobic exercise and in some cases; they can also cater the seniors to perform exercises on the pool or with the use of simple gym equipment like the tread mill. Although in most cases, they can accompany the elderly to go on morning or afternoon walks as a form of exercise.

Retirement communities understand that even the elderly who are in wheelchair also needs exercises. Self –propelling the wheelchair in itself is a form of effective upper body exercise. While other times, if a elderly is capable, they can use restorator bike as cardio exercise or place the restorator bike on a table top and use the hands to pedal it making it an upper body and cardio exercise at the same time.
Some senior homes have dance exercise sessions for the elderly who prefers this type of activity. It is a fun way of exercising and at the same time feeds their passion in dancing too.

Home Care Services made sure that they are able to assist the elderly in sustaining the health and wellness of the body through exercises that are age- appropriate but at the same time can also provide an avenue for entertainment. Exercises can be done indoors or outdoors to cater varied physical activities to the elderly making it dynamic.

Seniors must receive the holistic care that they deserve. Their well- being and self-worth must also be maintained as they reach their old age.
